If we pay attention at all to black music beyond the latest Wacka Flaka flame ditty and which stripper model Kanye West is dating, most of us know that June is when we celebrate black music. But June isn’t just about hot songs and the artists and producers who created them. Indeed, June also is Caribbean-American Heritage Month, the time of the year when we recognize the significance of Caribbean people and their descendants in the history and culture of the United States. Spearheaded by the Washington, D.C.-based think tank The Institute of Caribbean Studies, Caribbean-American Heritage Month, now in its sixth year, is feted with a film, food and comedy festival, legislative conferences, and tributes to Caribbean-Americans who’ve made their mark in American culture, like author Malcolm Gladwell (Jamaica) and actresses Sheryl Lee Ralph (Jamaica) and Cicely Tyson (Nevis).
