Congratulations Beyonce & Jay-Z: Welcome To the MyBrownBaby Crew!

Unless you’ve been under a rock or stuck in the electricity void of Hurricane Irene and have absolutely no connection to the outside world, you probably know that Beyonce announced on the MTV Video Music Awards that she and her husband of three years, Jay-Z, are expecting their first child. Beyonce showed off her baby bump on the red carpet shortly before the beginning of the VMA’s and later, after performing “Love On Top,” dropped her mic, unbuttoned her sequined jacket and rubbed her pregnant belly for the entire universe to see.

I have to admit: my heart fluttered just a little. Because I’m a sucker for black love. For beautiful black families. For the example they set for those of us who, devoid a model, can stand to see when we consider what a halfway decent, healthy, thriving, traditional black family looks like (The Cosbys, The Obamas and Will and Jada notwithstanding).

I’m especially excited to welcome another brown mommy-to-be into the fold.

Congratulations, Beyonce and Jay enjoy the journey!

  1. It was the sweetest thing to see tonight when she opened that sequined jacket and rubbed her belly… and Jay all beaming and proud in the crowd, saluting his wife. 🙂 Awww!

  2. I don’t think I’ve EVER seen Jay smile so hard or look so proud. That was so sweet of them to share that beautiful moment with us. They’ve always been so private, so I’m just pleasantly shocked. Beautiful!

  3. I fell in total love with the moment she rubbed her belly! Even got teary eyed! It was the perfect end to a full day of baby news, as I learned that a few of my friends who I adore are all expecting this year 🙂

  4. I almost jumped out of my bed when she started to perform Love On Top cause thats my JAM!!!!!! I love that song then to top it off she performed her ass off. To see the energy and excitement between her and Jay was crazy. That made my night and still excited about it and its not even mines. lol

  5. It was beautiful to see! I love it!

  6. Wow…..wow , beautiful

  7. After hearing that there had been some negative comments regarding Beyonce’s pregnancy, the first person I thought I about was you! No lie! I was on my way to class and I thought how I wished that Denene would respond about Black love and how we should celebrate it and instead of finding ways to condemn it. You’re the best, Chica!

  8. I was in the void of no electricity and was mad my aunt spoiled the surprise of watching it On Demand!!

  9. There is nothing more beautiful than a proud, glowing mama-to-be! Blessings to them!

  10. Love this post! Even when you do have positive relationship role models, it
still feels good to see people happy & in love. :)

  11. So happy for them. Bringing life into the world is always a joyous event. We need to learn to celebrating this because as Blacks we are all connected. I hope that we can get back to that ‘It Takes A Village’ concept and start being more supportive of our own kind. Wishing Bey and Jay a very safe and healthy pregnancy!

  12. It was like hearing my best girlfriend telling me she was pregnant. I can’t imagine how hard it is for such private successful young couple to experience such a private reveal. Bey said that several persons in her circle knew but respected her enough to let her announce to the public herself.

Seeing her many times perform, I worried that she was working so so hard that she wouldn’t let her body rest to carry a baby. She dances and sings harder than anybody I have ever seen. Happy birthday Bey bey!!!! With such a strong Mom by your side (like my mom Thelma) you have a voice to help you deal with the blessing (like my daughter Robyn).

I can’t wait to hear the songs you and jay and uncle kanye will write and sing now!!!! Much love and prayer!!!

  13. It was a beautiful performance! I’m happy for them and the road ahead.

  14. I’m with you, Denene. My heart fluttered, my stomach flipped, and my eyes even teared up a bit, to my husband’s surprise. It recorded the moment and watched it over and over. It was a very exciting moment for me–for days, and celebrity news usually irks me.
