Gabrielle Union Is Thinking About Becoming A Mom

Actress Gabrielle Union, star of practically every MyBrownBaby favorite to ever grace the big screen and girlfriend of Miami Heat guard Dwyane Wade, says she may be ready for her toughest role yet: Mommy.

Union, who is readying her star turn in Tyler Perry’s new flick, Tyler Perry’s Good Deeds, tells Ocean Drive magazine she never thought about having kids—until now. “I mean, they’re great in theory, but I never imagined having one [myself]. Maybe over the next five years I could wrap my brain around becoming a mother and what that would mean in terms of sacrifice and dedication,” Union says in the cover story. “I don’t do anything impulsively, so more toward the five years out than the one-year.”

Union, 39, is getting in plenty of practice with D-Wade’s children, Zaire Blessing Dwayne Wade and Zion Malachi Airamis Wade, two young boys from his previous marriage. She’s often seen hanging with the boys and Dwyane around the Miami area, where Dwyane lives with his children. The two, who grace the February cover of Essence magazine, say that they’re not rushing to get married—both have been through divorces—and say they want their next march down the aisle “to be right.” But Union acknowledges she would be ready for all that comes with being a mom, including putting her kids before her career. “When you prioritize children over yourself, your brand and career, wants, needs, hurts, desires, you always win.”

Yes indeed, you do. And clearly, Gabrielle Union is learning firsthand how to do just that from Dwyane Wade, a loving dad who, in winning custody of his sons from ex-wife Siohvaughn Wade, said his most important job was being a father to his kids. A baby produced in love between Gabrielle and Dwyane would be a lucky baby, indeed.

Everybody gets emotionally ready at their own point in time. However, unless she wants to use an egg donor or adopt or be a step mom(all viable options for being a mom/parenting), she needs to run to a fertility doctor right now. She needs to have her eggs evaluated and see if there is even current time to have a biological child at 39. There is a reason they call it a biological clock. Our emotional clock does not alter the biological clock. She may be the exception to the rule but don’t let all the moms over 40 fool you. Lucky for her she has the monry for a lot of the technology moms over 40 use BUT technology does not help everybody.

    • You’re absolutely right Michelle. With the proliferation 40+ (mostly celebrity) moms we see, one falsely get the impression that the biological clock is a myth. I wish more of these celebrities (and other 40+ moms) would come clean about the enormous amount of cash necessary, the numerous miscarriages, the several failed IVF attempts, the borrowed eggs, the surrogate mothers, the premature births and the months that premature babies spend in the NICU. These are all common occurences for women who purposely wait until they’re in their late 30s and early 40s to have children. It is not the walk in the park some would have you believe.

  2. Let’s not assume that ALL women who give birth in their 40s do so with medically assisted technology. I married for the first time at age 40 because I wanted a man who shared my spiritual belief. I conceived naturally, gave birth at age 42 and 44 to two healthy daughters. I started http://www.inseasonmom.org to support first time older moms in their late 30s and 40s.

  3. Thank you Cynthia. I don’t know why some women assume that women who have children in their late 30’s around 40 will have problems conceiving. I truly believe it is in God’s hands and if it is meant to be at that time for you, it will happen. There are also women who have children in their 20’s who have complications conceiving, so who’s to say when it is a suitable time for any woman. You take on that responsibility when you are ready and pray for the best.

  4. i have two grown kids and i dont mind getting twins when am 40 or even more, i believe children come from God and as long as a woman is healthy and still not in menopause conceiving and getting a healthy baby is very possible.
