Jada Pinkett Smith Shares A Touching Photo Of Willow And Will

It’s hard to believe that Willow Smith has anything close to a normal childhood, but a touching picture posted online by her mother has shown otherwise. Jada Pinkett Smith posted a picture on Twitter of Willow sleeping in dad Will Smith’s lap during a plane ride, with the caption, “Being a fatherless daughter these are the moments I cherish. Love. J”

Will Smith is known for doting on his children and has mentioned them frequently in interviews. Back in May, Smith shared how he felt about his daughter’s freedom of expression. “If I teach [Willow] that I’m in charge of whether or not she can touch her hair, she’s going to replace me with some other man when she goes out in the world who does the same thing,” he said in an interview. “That’s her hair. She has got to have command of her body.”

He also shared apprehension about his daughter dating. “Having two boys and a girl, I realize that boys take trouble to other people’s houses, and girls bring it home,” he told People magazine. “So, the thing we are struggling with is the rules and setting fair rules for the boys and for Willow, but she’s not having any of that.”

The “Whip My Hair” Willow—and by extension her parents—has received a fair amount of condemnation in our community for some of the choices she’s made concerning her hair, her clothing and the situations she’s found herself in. For instance, when she posted a picture of herself on Twitter looking like she was swinging on a Las Vegas stripper pole, critics came after her and her parents hard. The picture was quickly removed, but it led many to wonder what kind of supervision the free-spirited 11-year-old was getting at home if she could find herself in a situation where she could swing from a stripper pole, have someone take a picture of it, and then post it on Twitter—either without an adult being aware, or worse, with an adult’s approval.

But sweet moments like the one Willow Smith is sharing with Will Smith in Jada Pinkett Smith’s picture do wonders to remind that, not matter the antics or the criticism that follows, Willow is still a little girl—one who is in the capable, loving hands of parents who want the best for her. Just like we all do for our children.

    THIS. All day…

    • Totally was about to say the same thing, what Will said is so powerful and truthful. Childhood should include having the freedom to experiment, for all the talk of the Smith family, I am impressed with how connected they are. That photo tells a story far more powerful and positive of the other snippets that often are dissected by the masses.

  2. Great picture of father and daughter.

  3. I love the Smiths. I think they’re amazing parents, spouses and overall good people. I love seeing positive images like this when it comes to parenting in the Black community!

  4. Gr8t pic & story, I don’t always agree in what they do but this is the perfect example of what we need to share/ show our children. It just reminds us that no matter what the world says about us, we must trust in our parents to run back to when we need them. I know that whatever I say or do, I still can run to my parents and vent of what i’m feelin and know it will be ok because they have instilled in me enough that they will always be there 🙂

  5. Such a sweet father-daughter picture. So great to see.

  6. Maybe I’m a bit shallow, but am I the only one who noticed how cushy that plane seems….aiiight…seriously, wonderfully touching photo 🙂
