Check Out MyBrownBaby On The Rachael Ray Show!
Exciting news! Today, I’m one of four mommies kicking it with the celebrated chef/author/magazine editor
Rachael Ray on her fabulous afternoon gabfest, The Rachael Ray Show. I joined Rachael, actress Rikki Lake, and three other moms via Skype to talk about all things motherhood and, true to form, I gave my own unique perspective on what it means to be a mommy in 2009.To get a sneak peak, click HERE. To see show listings for your area, click HERE.
Of course, after you watch, come back to MyBrownBaby and share your thoughts.
And if you’re visiting for the first time after seeing today’s show, please come on in, kick off your shoes, and get comfortable here at my place. Here's the quick and dirty on MyBrownBaby: I'm Denene Millner, a 16-time author, contributing editor and Mom Squad member at Parenting and Essence magazines, a featured Parenting Post blogger at Parenting.com, the Real Talk mom at Momtourage, and associate editor at the travel magazine, Odyssey Couleur. My latest book, Act Like A Lady, Think Like A Man, which I wrote with the comedian Steve Harvey, debuted No. 1 on The New York Times Hardcover Advice Best Sellers List and remained there for 39 consecutive weeks; it was featured on Oprah twice. I also penned a memoir for Nene Leakes, star of Bravo’s The Real Housewives of Atlanta.
More importantly, I'm a mom of three beautiful kids, the wife of Nick Chiles, an awesome Pulitzer Prize-winning writer who is penning a book for celebrated gospel artist Kirk Franklin, the proud owner of a spectacular Goldendoodle, Teddy, and ridiculously giddy for no good doggone reason. Maybe I'm just a hopeless optimist, but I try to remind myself every day how blessed I am for good health, a sound mind, strength, and above all else, the good, hearty, everlasting love of a beautiful family.
So come on in and take a look around. Check out what I do to FIND ME-TIME, and how me and my girls KICK IT OL’ SCHOOL. Check our what legendary actress DIAHANN CARROLL whispered in my ear, how I feel about BLACK DADS, PLAYING IN THE SUN, and SOLO VACATIONS. You'll also find some great music here, too, including videos from artists like INDIA.AIRE, ANGIE STONE, and LEDISI, as well as some great recipes from my daughters' Home Made Love cookbook. You'll find, too, that I don't mind speaking my mind, particularly when the NEIGHBORS GO WILD, BET GETS LOW, and I get nervous for my AFRICAN AMERICAN SON. No conversation is off-limits, and sometimes it can get a little ROWDY around here. But every post is meant to give voice to black moms looking to get in on the parenting debate, and certainly to invite ALL moms, regardless of race, color, religion, sexual orientation, or background to talk about what we love to talk about most: motherhood.

Hey Denene! Me and wife just happen to be home today and "accidently" caught you on the show! lol Wife tapped me out my sleep to say "isnt that Denene?" Congrats. Rachel Ray sound like she had a lady crush on you for a minute.
AND TO ANONYMOUS Commenter: You dont need a site called my "White Baby" cause most of them are about them anyway. And if you did there is nothing wrong with that either. 🙂
hooray for you!!! I know you represented!
p.s. Dear Anonymous,
how can we haven open, honest dialogue with anonymous posts?
Missed the show, it comes on here @ 9AM and we were taking exams this morning. Wondering if I can see the show somewhere online since it has aired.
Congratulations to you!!
I will be in front of my TV at 2 p.m. just for you 🙂 I can't wait to see what you had to say!
And why are people always trippin over the name of your blog? If we call ourselves and our babies "brown" we are suddenly racist and not inclusive? Ridiculous.
Anonymous, if you took more than 2 seconds to read through some of the posts on this blog, you'd know better.

Congratulations Denene!! You're so wonderful and inspiring!:)
Congrats! You are awesome, per usual.
Congrats! I can't wait to see the show!
Don't even tell me that. I had the show on, saw Rikki Lake come out and then hubs and I left to vote and do some other things. I can't even believe I missed you. I am so sorry I missed that.
So sad we have to have a "site" for black mom's only! What happened to changing the world and making us all "equals"????????
I guess it's a "Time for change" just for some…….
Mom's are mom's people! Why make it a raciest thing?????? Babies don't know if we're black or white! We're just their mom's!
DEAR ANONYMOUS,
Thats the great thing about the internet. There are millions of OTHER sites you can visit that may be to your liking. So just find a parenting site that suites you.
All the best.
i missed the part about the money you said. i just heard ricki lake said she really liked that idea. can you tell me what it is you said about money and kids?
thank you
Awesome blog! I think what you are doing is commendable.
Denene,
Way to go…you certainly do us proud. I heart your blog!
Dear Anonymous,
If you take off your blinders, you will be amazed at the fact that this blog reaches out to ALL mommies. Don't hate on the positivity in our world.
That's what's up Denene! I'll be watching and recording this too!
You are my idol!!!!
Congratulations.
I caught the show and you were fabulous as usual!
Winks & Smiles,
Wifey
Thanks, everyone, for your warm wishes and kind words!
@Glenda: I told the panel of moms that I don't give allowance to congratulate my girls for good grades or to pay them for chores; it's a given that they're going to bring home "A's" and help upkeep the home in which they live. I give my girls allowance so that they can learn how to handle money; when they get paid, they split their allowance into three separate envelopes—one for savings, one for charity, and one for spending. At the end of the year, their charity money goes toward Christmas presents for kids who won't be getting presents for whatever reason; when the school year kicks off, they also buy school supplies for kids in need. Their savings just piles up, and the money they have for spending can be used at any time on most things (with my discretion, of course… they can't spend it all on Hubba Bubba… LOL!) I hope this helps!
@Anonymous
I named my site MyBrownBaby because I am African American mom raising brown babies, and I write about it on my blog. This is not an indictment against white moms or some kind of racist statement against people who are not African American. Quite the contrary, this site isn't about you at all. It's about the issues that affect moms of color and moms who are raising children of color—issues that are seldom, if ever, talked about on mediums that say they are for ALL moms. Now, while I am speaking to the experiences of African American moms, for sure, you will find, just like I said on the Rachael Ray Show, that a majority of the things black moms think about are the same as those white moms think about. We ALL want to raise healthy, smart, kind, honest, loving, successful children. But there ARE some experiences between us that are NOT going to be the same. Making those observations is not racist. But choosing to ignore them, or worse, refusing to open your mind to the idea that there are differences, sure as heck could be called suspect.
Please: Open your mind. Take a look at my blog before you assume that the word "brown" is a BAD thing. And read this post so that you can see where I'm coming from.

I finally saw it! YOU ARE SO FLY, Denene! I know I'm late, but CONGRATS!! And, I have to say, I think you should never freakin' explain again why the site is named MyBrownBaby! If people choose to put it in a box, that is their problem! If they look around and read the actual content, they wouldn't get HUNG UP ON THE NAME! Had to say that, sorry!
Never would have thunk I would find this so indiespansble.
