MyBrownBaby Fresh: Shane Evans’ “Faces of Black History”

We're loving children's book author and illustrator Shane Evans' The Faces of Black History, a daily series of illustrations featuring the facial expressions of famous black folk and links to their bios and stories. The illustrations are part of OLUIZUMZ, the super cute faces Evans creates for Olu, the character from his adorable book, Olu's Dream. We're loving This is my modern way to fly face (Alvin Ailey), This is my by any means necessary face, (Malcolm X), and the “This is my OK, what do you think about your hair?… face” (Madam C.J. Walker). But we especially got a BIG kick out of This is my blow that jazz trumpet the sounds is like Bebop!!!…face an homage to Dizzy Gillespie.

My girls and I are HUGE fans of Shane Evans' work; he's the artist whose illustrated more than 25 books, including the gorgeous girl pie faces in our personal favorites: Home Made Love, by bell hooks, Jean Marzallo's Shanna series, and; My Brother, Charlie, a picture book I wrote with Holly Robinson Peete. Olu's Dream is the first series Evans wrote and illustrated himself; it’s about a little boy who dreams B-I-G! Olu and his Oluizms are absolutely addictive.
