Light Of the Sun: And Yet Another Reason To Love Jill Scott & Her Rolling Hills

I mean, you know I can’t skip talking about MyBrownBaby favorite Jill Scott particularly now that her new album, The Light Of The Sun, is in heavy rotation on my kitchen iPod speaker. I’m thoroughly addicted to “Shame,” her playful take on the Special Ed hit, “The Magnificent,” and “So In Love,” featuring Anthony Hamilton, just makes me want to roll the windows down in the ride and float through the neighborhood with the radio turned all the way up. But it’s her song “Rolling Hills,” about the power we women possess in our curves and our need to use them and that incredible gift God gave us, called intuition, more wisely, that stays on repeat. I adore the music the upright bass is so sexy and sultry and sure, and the groove makes me want to twist my hips but it’s the message that I absolutely adore. I’ve promised myself that I’ll sit my girls down and let them listen to the words and explain to them what every note, every lyric, and every inflection means and implore them to take these words to heart:

Maybe you don’t recognize whatcha got between your thighs
So I’m gonna set you right, and I’m starting here tonight, well
Shine like the moon and strong like the sea
More expensive than money, more valuable than anything
Juicy mango summer peach
Make a lame man walk and a full man hungry, well
And if you don’t know what I’m saying then baby I’m telling you

There’s power in them rolling hills, come on
You’re a prize possession, not everybody’s worthy
Only reason I know is ‘cuz I headed down that road
And it’d be a shame for you not to have your own glow
Come on

Maybe you don’t recognize what you got between your eyes
So I’m gonna set you correct so you can get what you should get, yeah
Intuition, something sweet
Let you know what you know, let you find before you seek
Spirit of discernment, pray for it everyday
Let you know who should go and who you should let stay
And if you don’t know what I’m saying then baby I’m telling you

There’s power in them rolling hills, come on
You’re a prize possession, not everybody’s worthy to feel
Only reason I know is ‘cuz I headed down that road
And it’d be a shame for you not to have your own glow

There’s power in them rolling hills, come on
You’re a prize possession not everybody’s worthy
Only reason I know is cause I headed down that same road
I wanna see you glow, I wanna see you glow
Glow, I wanna see you shine
I mean all the time
Gotta let that light
Gotta let it shine so bright…

Though Jill, the mother of a beautiful brown baby boy, performed this song on The BET Awards with Idris Elba playing her man (!), there isn’t a video for it yet. I did, however, find videos for “Shame,” and “So In Love.” A little gift for you on this hot, dry hump day.

Enjoy!
