Sparkle Trailer: A Sneak Peek At Whitney Houston’s Final Role (VIDEO)

Oh. My. Goodness. Please understand, I can not WAIT for Sparkle, the new movie starring Whitney Houston, Jordin Sparks, Ceelo Green and Mike Epps, to come out in August. The original Sparkle, starring Irene Cara, Lonnette McKee, Philip Michael Thomas and Dorian Harewood is, hands down, one of my favorite music films (counted along with Dreamgirls, The Five Heartbeats and Cadillac Records), and so I’m totally stoked to see how the story updates, and especially how Whitney re-imagines her role as the cynical, overprotective mother, Effie, who is hellbent on protecting her daughters from the harsh reality of superstardom and an unforgiving music industry. Indeed, Whitney’s longtime film producing partner, Deborah Martin Chase, says Whitney’s reprise of the role is nothing short of masterful.

“Whitney loved this movie very much. This was her idea,” producer Deborah Martin Chase told the Associated Press. “The great thing for me as her friend and her producing partner is that this movie will be an essential part of her legacy … It’s the best performance of her life; she knew it at the time. She looked beautiful on camera, and she enjoyed every minute making the movie.”

Sparkle hits movie theaters in August; the soundtrack features new music from Ceelo Green and Jordin Sparks and, of course, Whitney Houston, whose star turn in this film was, tragically, her last. Watch the trailer for Sparkle, with Whitney singing “His Eye Is On the Sparrow” throughout, here on MyBrownBaby, courtesy of Yahoo! Movies.
