new mom_African AmericanI was nervous and scared and emotional and deeply, helplessly, hopelessly in love. It is that last part that I had to hold on to—to embrace with my entire being—because, God, when my Mari, my firstborn, wiggled from my womb and took her first breath and announced her arrival with that sweet, hearty cry, all this new mom could think was, “Oh dang, Denene, what did you do? What did you do? Surely, you’re going to break her.”

That feeling never, ever goes away, you know. It rears its head with every first: she’s breastfeeding but I don’t know if she’s getting enough—please don’t break her. All that gas in her little tummy is making her grimace and shout to the heavens—is she broken? Her little gums must be on fire with those two little teeth poking through—she is crying and literally breaking! First walk, first night with the babysitter, first whirl down the slide, first day of kindergarten, first friend, first report card, first sleepover (I could go on and on!)—all of it makes you question and fret and sweat with worry before, by some miracle, you finally settle in on this this one true thing: being a new mom and watching your child’s new experiences isn’t easy, but your baby is going to be all right. And the journey is… beautiful.

That is the constant, the thing that gets you through. Well, that and the sheer joy of Black motherhood.
