Know this: as the mother of Black daughters, I’ve grown weary of watching this discussion play itself out for the masses, without any kind of recognition that Black girls are catching physical, emotional and mental hell in America’s streets, schools and criminal justice systems. Still, I can’t dismiss the power that comes from letting children have their say about what it means when you’re growing up Black in America.

The Black boys and young Black men in this video do a stellar job putting voice to the weariness they feel when people react to and assign stereotypes and outright racism to skin color. But it’s what they say toward the end of the video that really hit me in the heart—touched my soul.

God bless these boys. God bless our children.
