I am giddy to introduce you to a talented new young voice on the blogging scene. His name is Miles Ezeilo, he is 15-years-old, and he has a whole lot to say. His fresh, insightful perspective can be found at his new site, thedarkerlens.com, where Miles is fighting through the babble to add a desperately needed point of view to the opinion landscape.

Black boys are dissected, profiled, parodied, probed, sensationalized and bemoaned more than any other creature on Earth. As a writer, I’ve even done a good deal of the dissecting and probing myself over the years. But rarely do we get a chance to hear from one of these boys, in his own words, unadulterated (in this case, meaning not having his views fed through an adult’s filter). That’s what Miles presents to us: A vital peek into the mind of a generation.

This week was an opportune time for Miles to launch his site, for the jury verdict of Michael Dunn offered us another one of these infuriating, head-scratching windows into the soul of white America—no verdict reached in the murder of Jordan Davis, yet attempted murders for the shots he missed? Huh? The verdict gave Miles yet another load of crap to download into his 15-year-old brain, less than a year after grappling with the George Zimmerman verdict.

“I get scared every time I turn on the news now. My thoughts on the verdict of Jordan Davis, the 17-year-old young African American man who was shot to death by Michael Dunn are simple: as a black boy in this day and age, my trust and sense of safety is dwindling as I write this,” Miles writes. “I’m not a ‘thug’ in any way, shape, or form. I get good grades, I try to use manners when I need to, and always try to keep a smile on my face. But I know that that doesn’t mean a thing to someone who is threatened by me.”

The boy is brilliant and I can’t wait to see what he has in store for us. From the day he was born, I have watched Miles grow into an impressive young man. Not only is he a straight-A student, a stellar athlete, a gifted championship debater at his Atlanta high school and an extremely handsome young man, Miles also happens to have the biggest heart and most generous spirit of any kid I’ve ever met. And I’m not just saying this because he happens to be my sister’s son. The boy is bad.

I invite you to go over to thedarkerlens.com and check him out. He might even help you gain an greater insight into those confounding creatures called teenagers.
